On Geekdad:
My sense is that blogs work best when they’ve got a tight focus and a distinct niche.
“Things David Dworin is interested in” might be too narrow. By any other measure, this blog is way too broad. Welcome to my brain.

Depends on your definition of “working well.” Some of the most popular blogs out there are niche blogs about technology or politics or mommying or whatever, but you can also get a loyal base of readers by writing about normal everyday stuff, your interests, etc.
I think that there’s a cap to how far you can go by writing about normal every day stuff, essentially making your journal public. When those blogs work, it’s usually because they’re exceptionally well written and it takes the place of what could otherwise be a magazine column. For every ‘publication-grade’ journal blog, though, there’s a few thousand crap-filled ones that never really get beyond a select group of friends.
